Memorial Day Weekend

What a treat it was to have a three day weekend! We decided to stick close to home this year and check out what our city had to offer in the way of a Memorial Day celebration.  We started off the weekend by enjoying Flavor Ice on the front porch.  My child is now an addict and he asks for "Icies" whenever he happens to wander near the freezer.
We took a day to spend some time with Grams and Grandad in Buffalo.  We grilled and hung out and then Weston and Grams had an impromptu picnic in the front yard.

On Memorial day, we headed downtown for a parade. It was a hot, sunny day so Weston got to try out his new hat.  He actually kept it on his head the whole time we were outside!  The parade was, frankly, disappointing.  There were only a few Veterans walking, followed by the boy scouts and girl scouts, a couple of patriotic biker dudes, the junior high marching band, and an old firetruck.  It was literally less than 5 minutes long. Bummer.  After the parade, we headed down to the park where there was a Memorial Day ceremony.  After the paltry parade, I didn't have high expectations for the ceremony but it turned out to be really good.  There were some great speakers and there was a really good turn out.  The high school band played patriotic songs and we all payed tribute and gave thanks to those who have served our country.  At the end, there was a gun salute.

As usual, my active child would not sit still for a moment of the ceremony.  Luckily, I thought to bring his special monkey.  And what, you ask, makes this monkey so special?  Well, it doubles as a leash.  Don't judge unless you have or have had a two-year-old!  Weston is too big and too strong for me to hold onto these days.  He just wants to wander and run and I was afraid of losing him in the crowd so he got wear his special monkey while I followed behind.  We certainly got a lot of strange looks from the crowd as we made lap after lap around the park, me following my leashed child.  Some people chuckled, other people pointed and shook their heads disapprovingly. The best response was from another mom who remarked that my monkey leash was cuter than her bear leash.  We had a good laugh about that.  In the end, Weston did not get lost so I'd say the special monkey was a success.

After the ceremony, we headed home to spend some time in the sun.  Weston got to play in his kiddie pool and Mommy got to chase the runaway beach ball up and down the street a thousand times.

This kid loves beach balls! Well, he loves all balls.  He loves anything that can become a ball.  The latest "balls" he has found around the house this week included a rolled up diaper, a peice of wadded newspaper, and an orange.  If it can be thrown, he calls it a ball.  Most of the time, he calls the items "baseballs".  I think Daddy is having a major influence here!  Imagine my surprise when Weston exclaimed, "Baseball!", and then I turned, only to be hit in the face with a rolled up dirty diaper.  Ugh. It was definitely NOT a baseball.  Though an actual baseball would have hurt more so maybe I should be grateful!

While I was chasing rogue beach balls and observing Weston as he loaded his pool with landscaping rock, Tom was in the garage working on our latest home project.  We are refinishing our dresser.  We orginally picked up the dresser for free and we thought it would be a temporary dresser until we could afford something better but we ended up falling in love with the shape and size so we are going to try to restore it. The dresser had lots of water damage on the top and there were lots of places where the finish was coming off. Plus, it had really, REALLY ugly 80's fake gold hardware. We had leftover dark stain from another project and we also had some polyurethane sealer from when we did the basement doors so we just have to sand, stain, seal, and figure out a way to make the hardware look better.  I hope it turns out OK!  I'll post an 'after' picture eventually.

We ended our weekend with strawberries and cream on the front porch.  I ♥ America!
